awesome update – thank you! the family portrait is indeed happier than any i can remember in my own family. it’s so unfair how one family can have such a good life and another’s is torn to pieces through no fault of their own. it is not clear in the story why elia’s father left, except for being a dead-beat dad/husband. and though elia’s actions seemed stupid, certainly not worth what happened to her. augh, i feel so bad for her mother getting the news.
I love the color contrast in the portrait from the others in the room. Vandi’s family in there actually seem to have taken a life of their own from the way that their skin is colored and those looking in are shaded to match the lighting in the room.
This is a bit off topic from the pages here but I’ve been wanting to ask, what exactly happened to Vandi’s mom when she gave birth to the twins in the flash back in chapter 1?
BetsyT: Roe went into a state of shock from the pain and blood loss after her extremely hard labor, and was a vegetable for quite some time. She got better, though, obviously. ;)
But we will get to that eventually, don’t worry. :)
soraoathkeeper: That is still kind of true. :) Roe is pretty weak and sickly (she always was, that’s why she went comatose after giving bith to Lai and Pim), making her a bit of a financial burden for the family.
And Betsy, I had that same question. I actually wondered about it after rereading the first 100 pages and realized Roe is awake and calls out to her daughter near the beginning of the story.
Oh thank you for the explanation as well as the closeup on the portrait. I went back and read a few times and still felt I was missing something on the story.

Yeah, I was a tad bit confused too. I thought part of Vandi’s incentive to stay behind and get the gold eggs was to pay for a doctor to treat Roe?
And oh Dores’ mom, how surprised will you be when who I think the artist of the portrait is revealed?

Sigh… it’s going to be harder to read with each update… knowing what’s in store for their families.
